The Ministry for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg has approved the acidification of grapes, must and wine of the 2017 vintage for the growing regions of Baden and Württemberg. The ministry stated that "in 2017, the exceptional weather conditions required for the authorisation of exceptional acidification were present". The state of Rhineland-Palatinate had already granted this permission for its growing regions Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Mittelrhein, Nahe, Ahr, Mosel and Saar a few days ago.

The course of vegetation so far had led to a clearly premature ripening of the grapes with high pH values and low acidity levels. "Therefore, as already in Rhineland-Palatinate, acidification was also exceptionally permitted in Baden and Württemberg," the ministry writes in a statement.
