Nick Pegna, long-time head of the wine department of the renowned London wine trader Berry Bros & Rudd, has joined Sotheby's as the new global head of the wine and spirits department. The British auction house said the new appointment was an important part of its expansion plans. According to the statement, Pegna is to expand the market position of the auction house and to develop a strategy to accelerate the growth in the wine and spirits sector worldwide.
Sotheby's has also brought in specialists for spirits in Asia as well as managing directors for retail branches in Zurich and New York. They are to drive growth in new markets and strengthen sales.
Pegna had led Berry Bros & Rudd's global wine sales for 23 years, during which time he built up the Asian business in Hong Kong and Singapore. Since 2016, he also led Sotheby's wine and spirits business in Asia. Most recently, Nick Pegna was managing director of his own wine sales and consulting company for private customers.
