Vinea Wachau is the first Austrian territorial conservation association to be certified as "Sustainable Austria". At an extraordinary general meeting, 89 percent of the members present voted in favour of the project plan drawn up by the association's board. Smaller businesses in particular are to be actively supported in the gradual conversion.

The online tool "Sustainable Austria" makes it possible for Austrian winegrowers to carry out a self-assessment and apply for certification, which can be indicated on the label. In addition to the processes for grape production, winemaking and vineyard management, quality targets for social and economic aspects are also defined.
The chairman of Vinea Wachau Emmerich H. Knoll, who represents around 200 wineries in the Wachau, is "proud that we are probably one of the first wine-growing regions in the world to go down this path united and as a community".
