Two people died while working in the cellar at the Crespo Zabala family winery in the Basque Country. Gerardo Jubera had fallen into a tank of Rioja while checking the fermentation process. While trying to pull him out, his brother-in-law Felix Crespo also lost consciousness due to inhaling carbon dioxide. For both of them, all help came too late. Another worker was taken to hospital with CO2 poisoning. Local health and safety officials have since taken over the case and are investigating the deaths.
The incident occurred just two weeks after a Treviso winemaker died trying to save a colleague who had fainted in a wine barrel. Fermentation gas accidents remain a common cause of death in wine cellars.
