According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), turnover in the hotel and restaurant sector in Germany fell by 3.2 percent in April 2023 compared to the previous month. Real calendar- and seasonally-adjusted hospitality turnover in April 2023 was 1.4 per cent lower than in April 2022 and even 14.6 per cent below the level of April 2019, the comparable month before the Corona pandemic. The restaurant industry in particular is suffering from declining sales. In April 2023, restaurants and pubs recorded 6.1 per cent lower sales than in the previous month and 17.7 per cent lower than in April 2019. Hotels and other accommodation establishments recorded a real calendar- and seasonally-adjusted sales decline of 1.5 per cent in April 2023 compared to the previous month. Turnover was thus 7.1 per cent below the pre-crisis level of April 2019.
