South Tyrolean Wine Consortium

The St. Magdalener Schutzkonsortium in Bolzano celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023. This makes the consortium and its predecessors the first protection association for a designation of origin for wine in Italy.

The Vernatsch grape variety played a major role in South Tyrol for a long time and has shaped viticulture there for decades. Although the area under Vernatsch cultivation has declined over the past 30 years, winegrowers in the St. Magdalener winegrowing region in particular remain loyal to the variety. Many young winegrowers are trying to reinterpret the variety and give it a new reputation.

The young generation of St. Magdalener producers is reflecting on its heritage and, through an open-minded approach, is managing the balancing act between preserving traditional winemaking methods and interesting new interpretations, explain representatives of the protection consortium. The wine-growing area around St. Magdalena is still a lively centre of wine-growing in South Tyrol and a reference for Vernatsch. Due to the differentiation of production, there is on the one hand the lighter, Vernatsch-typical St. Magdalener, and on the other hand the very strong, wood-grained Selektions-Magdalener. This diversity makes it a traditional and at the same time modern wine.

In contrast to many other areas of South Tyrol, where the winery cooperatives set the tone, the self-marketing of wines was also very widespread in the past around St. Magdalena. The producers want to preserve and expand this "lived farm tradition".
