Alejandro Fernández, the founder of the Pesquera winery, has died in Santander at the age of 88. In 1975, he introduced the Tinto Pesquera, which would later become his most famous wine. Only ten years later, Robert Parker described the Pesquera as the "Peter of Spain" and one of the best wines in the world. He was also instrumental in founding the DO Ribera del Duero. For this he received the Gold Medal of Merit from the then King Juan Carlos I. The Fernández Rivera family business, which is active in over 70 countries, also owns the Condado de Haza, Dehesa la Granja and El Vinculo wineries.
