Cantina Muggittu

The Italian Ministry of Industry has rejected Red Bull's appeal against the label of the Sardinian winery Cantina Muggittu. This can now be registered as a logo. The Austrian energy drink company had taken legal action against the vintner Mattia Muggittu to renounce the logo with two oxen and a stylised red plough because it was "too similar" to its own.

"We have in no way imitated Red Bull's logo. Our wine label is a tribute to the wine-growing traditions of Mamoiada. On it you don't see bulls, but oxen, with which we still plough and which are a symbol of our viticulture," the winemaker explained at the beginning of the year and comments on the verdict thus: "I am happy about this decision, which has proved us right: The logo is an expression of our history, as we had claimed from the beginning." He was supported by the Italian farmers' association Coldiretti and says he received many congratulations for this "David against Goliath" victory - also from Austria.

His lawyer Mauro Intagliata said, "This decision is a victory for Mattia and all of Sardinia, and not only that. It is a resounding victory of Sardinia's thousand-year-old traditions against the arrogance of economic power."
