The largest Palatinate wine fair "Wein am Dom" ended with a new record number of visitors. By the end of the event, about 4,000 visitors had been counted at the six locations in the historic city centre of Speyer. After the huge rush on Saturday and long queues at the ticket offices, the second day of the fair was calmer. The organisers, the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture and Pfalzwein e. V., counted just under 1300 visitors on Sunday, compared to 2750 wine lovers on Saturday. "Besides the record number of visitors, we are particularly pleased with the enthusiasm and positive feedback from visitors and participating wineries and winegrowers' cooperatives," said a spokesperson for the organisers. This year, those interested in wine were able to taste about 1000 wines from 170 Palatinate wineries and winegrowers' cooperatives.

What was striking was the very young audience that filled the fair venues, especially on Saturday, and tasted their way through the range of wines on offer. "I have been here in Speyer since the beginning, but I have never seen so many young faces," reported one vintner. The focus of interest was mainly on white wines, which the vintners also attributed to the sunny, warm weather. Bouquet varieties such as Sauvignon blanc, Gewürztraminer or Scheurebe were particularly in demand. In addition, guests poured themselves wines of the dominant Palatinate grape variety, Riesling, as well as Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The new trade fair venue, the Heiliggeistkirche, was very well received by visitors and vintners alike.
