Pope Francis has commissioned the prominent oenologist Riccardo Cotarella to produce a wine for the Vatican. For this purpose, around two hectares of vines were planted in the papal gardens of the Castel Gandolfo summer residence on the shores of Lake Albano, to be harvested for the first time in 2023. The 20,000 bottles will be ready to drink from 2026, but will not be destined for the trade. According to Cotarella, the wine will be used exclusively for the Vatican's own purposes. The original idea of importing vines from the Middle East, for example from Palestine, for the Vatican vineyard had failed due to bureaucratic hurdles. Now vines from the region have been planted, but Cotarella did not want to reveal exactly which varieties.
