The average alcohol values of top red wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Piedmont and California have increased significantly over the past 30 years. This is the result of an analysis of wines from the vintages 1990 to 2019 by the Liv-Ex trading platform.

According to the analysis, the value of Bordeaux red wines increased from an average of 12.7 per cent in the 1990s to just under 14 per cent in the period from 2010 to 2019. Californian wines increased their alcohol value from an average of 13.7 per cent (1990-1999) to 14.6 per cent (2010-2019), while in Tuscany they rose from 13.7 (1990-1999) to 14.2 per cent (2010-2019). In Piedmont, the average values were just below 14 per cent between 1990-1999 and increased somewhat more moderately to about 14.3 in 2010-2019. Burgundy recorded the smallest increase in this period, with average values from about 13.2 to 13.3 per cent alcohol by volume. According to Liv-Ex, these values are calculated averages, which can vary from producer to producer.

The calculation was based on 35,000 wines, of which the Liv-Ex team verified 20,000 by checking the labels.
