The champagne house Vranken-Pommery has officially applied for planning permission for a wine production facility in Hampshire, England. In the new winery, the group in the future wants to vinify its English sparkling wine Louis Pommery and create the capacity for further sparkling wines. Vranken-Pommery already owns 40 hectares of vineyards near Winchester, the grapes of which are currently processed on the neighbouring farms Pringlestone Estate and Hattingley Valley Wines.
Julien Lonneux, managing director of Vranken-Pommery UK, emphasises the cooperation with the local authorities: "The project is coherent and respects the environment, the landscape and the ecosystem. We informed Winchester City Council about the application and also submitted a pre-planning application before the formal submission, on which we received and incorporated comments. We have confidence in the decision of the authorities."
Manager Sarah Hicks says of the project, "We know we have to dig deep to avoid impacting on the landscape," adding that they want to work with other English wine producers, "We are also looking at other ways we can support local producers. For example, can we help with the supply of bottles, capsules and corks? We buy millions of bottles so we can get them at a better price than many others." Julien Lonneux reiterates the collegiate approach, "We are not here to bring anything special to the English wine industry, we are here to make the best wine on this amazing English terroir. We are simply doing our job as winemakers and will continue to do it with the utmost passion and dedication."
