In future, the Bordeaux appellation Pomerol will ban the use of herbicides for weed control in the entire growing area. A minimum requirement for this had already been included in the production rules in 2008, and now the ban has been officially confirmed. "In France, Pomerol is the first AOC to completely ban chemical weed control", emphasises Laurent Fidèle, representative of the New Aquitaine region of the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO).

The president of the appellation, Jean-Marie Garde, explains that the ban on all chemical weed control is intended to keep them ahead of the game. It is the collective will of the winegrowers. "We have to be a driving force," says Garde.

The Pouilly Fuissé appellation had already banned any weed control with chemical agents in November 2020. However, the ban has so far only applied to the Premier Cru vineyards and not to the entire appellation.
