The harvest in the southern Spanish growing region of Catalonia is about one third lower due to the massive spread of mildew. This is reported by regional media. In individual farms in the eleven growing regions of the region, the damage is up to 80 percent. The pest was able to spread rapidly, especially in the very wet first half of 2020. The renowned organic wine grower Josep Maria Albet i Noya, for example, said that such a scale had not been seen for three generations. In the first six months it rained more than usual in a whole year. In addition, climate change has worsened the situation for the winegrowers. The harvest had begun nine days earlier than usual, and the extreme rainfall had been followed by a severe heat and drought wave. The weather conditions are becoming increasingly difficult, especially for organic winegrowers.
