The German Wine Institute (DWI) has published the 2020/2021 statistical data for German wine. The documentation reflects the figures for 2019, according to which the area under cultivation has remained unchanged for several years at 103,000 ha. In 2010, it was 102,000 ha.

According to the figures, wine consumption by German consumers has declined moderately. In 2019, it was 20.1 litres per year and person, which is 0.4 litres less than in the previous year. Nevertheless, the value is within the long-term average of 20 to 21 litres. The consumption of Schsumwein remained unchanged at 3.3 litres.

Sales of German wines had remained stable compared to 2018, although wine purchases had declined by 0.9 per cent overall. German wines thus held a market share of 45 per cent. The most important import country is Italy with a market share of 16 per cent and a value of 925 million euros. It is followed by France with twelve per cent and a market value of 732 million euros.

In food retail, consumers spent an average of 3.12 euros per litre, which is three cents more than in 2018. This corresponds to a decrease of eight cents per litre compared to the previous year's price. This was due to the larger wine supply following the high-yield 2018 vintage. On the other hand, the price for German wines directly from producers and in specialist wine shops had risen by nine cents to 6.89 euros per litre.
