Due to the current shortage, many wineries are now having their bottles rinsed and reusing them. As the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) reports, a bottle washing company in Wachenheim (Pfalz) is booming like never before. According to the report, more and more winegrowers there are collecting used bottles due to the massive shortage of glass and having them processed by the company "Glasklar".

The bottle washing company currently has more customers than ever before in its 30-year history, owner and operations manager Stefan Fey told SWR. 30,000 bottles are washed every day, said the company manager. "We are planning to run two shifts to meet the demand that is there at the moment," he added.

The advantage of the returnable system, he said, is the low cost for the wineries. Because new bottles, if you can get any, have become very expensive in the meantime, he said. "A rinsed returnable bottle costs 19 cents including transport," Fey told SWR. But a new bottle currently costs 32 cents - and prices are still rising. At the same time, something would be done for the environment: According to the report, the production of a new bottle produces 600 grams of CO2, about three times as much climate-damaging gas as the rinsing process.
