The champagne house Moët & Chandon will introduce a plastic-free capsule foil made of aluminium and paper from October 2024. The innovative packaging called "Essentielle" was developed by Amcor Capsules, based in Zurich. The new film is made from paper produced in Europe. As a result, its CO2 footprint is 31 per cent lower than that of polylaminate films commonly used in the industry. It also contains around 60 percent aluminium, which can be recycled.
"Amcor Capsules wants to revolutionise the industry with Essentielle by offering a recyclable, plastic-free solution that is suitable for fast packaging lines," says Yannick Magnon, Managing Director of Amcor Capsules.
"For over ten years, we have been committed to reducing our environmental impact and CO2 emissions. This year, we want to intensify this even further, and the collaboration with Amcor Capsules on the Essentielle film reflects this commitment," said Sibylle Scherer, President and CEO of Moët & Chandon, in a press release.
Initially, the "Essentielle" capsule will only be available with texturing to allow sparkling wine producers to maintain the familiar appearance of their bottles and the productivity of their packaging lines. An Essentielle film with a smooth surface will be launched in the first quarter of 2025.
