In most German wine-growing regions, the main grape harvest has begun for varieties such as Frühburgunder, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder. The harvest will also start soon for the remaining Pinot varieties varieties, while for Riesling it will probably not start for another two to three weeks, depending on the region.
Due to the current sunny and dry weather conditions, the grapes, especially Pinot Noir, are currently developing very favourably. If it stays like this, the German Wine Institute (DWI) expects a good quality harvest. The good fruit set and good water supply could lead to a higher harvest volume than the ten-year average of 8.8 million hectolitres. However, further rainfall could still throw a spanner in the works for winegrowers.
