The German beverage group Henkell & Co has taken over the Catalan cava producer Freixenet. As Spanish media report, Henkell acquired a majority of 50.67 per cent of Freixenet's shares a few days ago for around 220 million euros. Rumours about the negotiations had already been circulating for two years. By doing so, Henkell wants to become the largest sparkling wine producer in the world.

In April 2016, it had become public that the cava producer had received a buy-out offer. In this context, Henkell had confirmed "a possible cooperation" as early as then.

Freixenet is considered the best-known brand name in the Spanish wine industry. The company currently has 18 production sites and wineries on three continents. Founded in 1861, the cava house is owned in three parts by the family of entrepreneur Jose Ferrer. The Henkell&Co. group in Wiesbaden, which belongs to the Oetker Group, is an international sparkling wine, wine and spirits producer with subsidiaries in 21 countries.
