In the past wine business year, Germans drank on average 0.6 liters more wine per person between August 2019 and July 2020 than in the same period of the previous year. This is the result of the current wine consumption balance, which was calculated by the German Winegrowers' Association on behalf of the German Wine Institute (DWI). According to this, a total of 17.2 million hectolitres of domestic and foreign still wines were consumed in this annual period, which, converted to 83.1 million inhabitants, corresponds to a per capita consumption of 20.7 litres.

The wine consumption balance represents the entire wine market. It includes consumption outside the home, for example in the catering trade, as well as purchases from retailers and producers. "The fact that wine consumption has nevertheless increased in the past wine business year, despite the gastronomy being closed due to the corona, is probably also due to the cancelled holiday trips abroad. Moreover, more wine was purchased in the trade during the first lockdown. Many consumers filled up their wine stocks during this time", DWI managing director Monika Reule explains.

However, sparkling wine consumption could not benefit from this development. It amounted to 2.6 million hectoliters in the past wine year and thus slightly decreased by 0.1 liters to 3.2 liters per person and year.

With this demand volume, the German wine market ranks fourth among the world's largest consumer markets for wine. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), most wine is consumed in the USA (33 million hl), followed by France (26.5 million hl) and Italy (22.6 million hl).
