The German Winegrowers' Association (DWV) wants to fundamentally reform its wine labelling system. As reported by the news agency dpa, the association now favours a geographical pyramid system with six levels that has been discussed for some time. "The closer the origin, the higher the quality must be," said President Klaus Schneider.

The new model contains the following levels: The lowest category bears the simple name "German wine". This is followed by "Landwein" with a "protected geographical indication" and then the "protected designation of origin". It is divided into the four categories "Anbaugebiet", "Bereich", "Ortswein" and "Lagenwein". The idea behind this is to further reduce the quantity in each level from the bottom to the top. In this way, the association wants to try to bring a new order into the confusion of wine designations. Currently, the current system, which is largely determined by residual sugar, competes with the various regional categories such as "Selection" or "Classic", the terroir classification of the VDP as well as the wineries' own systems.

The DWV wants to pass the reform before the end of this legislative period. The new designation system should also be in line with European wine designation law. In this way, the designations of wines could also be protected throughout Europe.
