Wine tourism in the 13 German wine-growing regions will take off in the long term. This is what Professor Dr. Gergely Szolnoki from the Institute of Wine and Beverage Management at Geisenheim University says after evaluating several surveys among wineries.

During the Corona pandemic, many wineries developed creative solutions for the continuation of wine tourism offers and were thus able to address new target groups. 74 percent of the wineries that offered online wine tastings want to continue them in any case. Another 23 percent are considering it. Only for five percent of the wineries were online tastings unprofitable.

According to Professor Szolnoki, regional tourism gained significantly in importance, which favours the wineries: "Wine tourism will benefit from the general trend towards individual and quality tourism. Likewise, the increased awareness of sustainability and the value of nature for one's own well-being throughout society will have a positive effect. In our estimation, this is not just a short-term recovery and a return to pre-Covid levels. We expect the importance of wine tourism for wine-growing regions and businesses to increase in the medium and long term." In this context, German wineries are particularly well-positioned in international comparison as far as activities outside the wineries are concerned. According to the report, 70 per cent of German wineries have offers for tourists in their programme. This meets the growing need of guests to combine tourism and exercise as well as to discover nature and biodiversity. These are fundamental trends in the market and society.
