The Johanneshof winery in Bad Kreuznach-Bosenheim was the first in Germany to harvest frozen grapes for ice wine production. Winemaker Martin Korrell harvested Riesling grapes with his harvest assistants in the Bad Kreuznacher Paradies site at minus eight degrees Celsius. The legal requirements for ice wine harvesting presuppose temperatures below seven degrees Celsius. The production of ice wine is therefore not possible in every year. Thus, the winegrowers waited in vain for frost in 2019. The Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture announced that this year 152 farms in Rhineland-Palatinate with the growing regions Palatinate, Rhine-Hesse, Middle Rhine, Moselle, Nahe and Ahr registered a total area of around 107 hectares for a possible ice wine harvest. Last year, there were only 93 farms with a total of 72 hectares.
