After the harvest for Federweiß and for base wines for sparkling wines was already in full swing, the grape harvest for vinification began in many wine regions at the beginning of September, according to the German Wine Institute (DWI). The prelude is made every year by varieties such as Frühburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc or Müller-Thurgau. Late ripening grape varieties such as Riesling are not expected to be ready for harvest until mid to late September, depending on the growing region.
A first cautious national yield estimate assumes a harvest volume of around nine million hectolitres, which is roughly at the level of the ten-year average. According to the DWI, a more precise forecast will only be possible in a few weeks when the harvest is more advanced.
