In the Bordeaux growing region of St. Emilion, the costs for producers to apply for classification have increased almost tenfold since 2006. The current fees for the 2022 procedure are 14,000 euros, for the Premier Grand Cru classification 21,000 euros. In 2006, the costs were still 1,500 euros; before that, the registration of wines was free of charge.

The reason for the ever increasing costs are the clearly rising prices for Grand Cru wines from St.Emilion.

The tender for the classification of Saint-Emilion 2022 started on 8 March 2021 and is organised by the National Institute for Origin and Quality (INAO). In setting the fees for the applications, the institute also took into account provisions for possible future legal proceedings as well as the legal protection of the future classification.
