Christie's auction house in New York is auctioning off a bottle of Château Pétrus from the 2000 vintage that was stored on the International Space Station (ISS) for 14 months. The auction house estimates the proceeds to be around 830,000 euros. Should it actually be achieved, it would be the most expensive wine bottle in the world.

A total of twelve bottles of Grand Cru were returned to earth from the ISS last January. Tests at the Institute of Wine Sciences at the University of Bordeaux and a tasting showed that they retain their quality even under these unusual ripening conditions in space. Only their colour and some aromas or flavours had changed.

The proceeds from the auctioned bottle will go towards funding future space missions that deal with agricultural research.
