The famous Bordeaux winemaker Christian Moueix, for many years manager of Château Pétrus, has bought two more wineries in the Bordelais. He acquired Clos de la Madeleine as well as Château Magnan La Gaffelière, both located in St.-Émilion. The French commercial bank Société Générale sold him both estates.
Christian Moueix explained to "Wine Spectator" that he now wants to continue the Clos de la Madeleine, which is only 2.4 hectares in size, himself. In contrast, he wants to let the Château Magnan La Gaffelière, with its 12 hectares of vineyards, progress independently for five years. Only after that, he said, would he decide on its future.
Shortly before, it became known that he had passed on Château Fonroque, also located in St. Emilion and working biodynamically, to the Guillard family of investors. They own one of the largest insurance groups in France, but so far no winery.
Moueix has been the owner of vineyards such as Château Bélair-Monange in St. Emilion or Dominus Estate in the Napa Valley since he left Pétrus in 2011.
