Château Angélus has become the third top wine estate in Saint-Émilion (Bordeaux) to withdraw its application for the 2022 classification. Angélus had been classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A since 2006.
"The classification of Saint-Émilion has gone from being a source of progress to a vehicle for conflict and instability. Angélus regrets this damaging context but takes note of it and is leaving this system by withdrawing from the 2022 classification," says a press release from the house.
It continues: "The court decision fining Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Angelus) for his participation in the responsible bodies (for classification) confirms our decision to withdraw from a procedure whose sustainability no longer seems guaranteed and whose benefits no longer outweigh the risks of unfair accusations. The values we hold dear and the dynamics in which Angélus is now involved lead us to consider the current system unsuitable for the challenges of our winery and its appellation," explains Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, president of Angélus.
Château Angelus is the third château to withdraw from the classification, after Château Cheval-Blanc and Château Ausone had already announced their withdrawal in July 2021.
