The Champagne Association CIVC confirms that deliveries to Russia have resumed. These were suspended after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in July forcing champagne producers to call their products "sparkling wine". The use of the word "Shampanskoye" - the Russian translation for champagne - is thus reserved for Russian sparkling wines.
According to reports, Moscow restaurants and bars were also taken aback by the move. Only a few have changed their drink menus, removing brands such as Moët Hennessy and Dom Perignon from the "champagne" section of their wine lists.
The Comité Champagne states that "Russian consumers should not be penalised", but continues to demand "full recognition of its appellation in Russia and the amendment of this law to provide consumers with clear and transparent information". He said the French government would also continue to campaign for this.

With a turnover of around 35 million euros, Russia is the fifteenth most important export market for champagne.
