The Catena Institute of Wine in Mendoza (Argentina) says it has produced "groundbreaking" scientific proof of the existence of terroir. The results of its research project of the vintages 2016 to 2018 with three wine regions, six regions, twelve cultivation areas, and 23 vineyard parcels of the size of less than one hectare have now been published in the scientific journal "Scientific Reports".

According to this, the institute proves that the wines from different terroirs also clearly differ chemically. According to the Catena Institute, the vintages of wines from larger regions could be assigned just as clearly chemically as those from small parcels. The vintage of each wine analysed could be clearly assigned with the help of the analysis method.

In addition, wines from eleven of the 23 examined parcels could also be assigned with one hundred percent certainty. For wines from the other twelve vineyards, the accuracy was 83 percent. The institute did not report which chemical analyses exactly led to the results.
