In France, more and more photos are appearing in the social networks showing emerging leaves on the vines, the French wine magazine Vitisphere reports. Especially in the south of France, more and more opening leaves have been observed since 9 January. The extremely mild temperatures, which have been prevailing in the southwest of France and in the entire Mediterranean region for several weeks, led to the fact that many vintners could not finish pruning the vines before the vegetation cycle started. In the meantime, many photos of sprouted Grenache and Syrah vines are circulating on Facebook.

Now meteorologists and vintners fear that bud break could start as early as the end of February. According to Vitisphere, meteorologists are predicting a high-pressure area with a high probability of frost in April, which could lead to devastating damage, as it did in 2021.
