The Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) is working specifically to reduce the CO2 emissions of its wine production. It is an issue that concerns both the present and the future of the region, said Marie-Catherine Dufour, head of the CIVB's technical department, at the association's general assembly a few days ago.

"The interprofession is currently developing a strategy that includes all our emissions: Glass and packaging, fuel oil consumption, logistics and energy. The goal is to reduce our emissions by 54 per cent by 2030 compared to 2007," explained Allan Sichel, President of the CIVB. Thus, the next forum for sustainable development of Bordeaux wines will also fully focus on the CO2 balance in order to clarify this orientation.

The strategy to reduce greenhouse gases is part of the broader approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) that is being discussed under the name "Bordeaux Cultivons Demain", Sichel emphasised. The label "Bordeaux Cultivons Demain" must become a competitive advantage, Marie-Catherine Dufour added. She refers to the cooperation with the large French trade chains and to the sustainability requirements coming from abroad. In order to have a say in the trade, she said, one must continue to work on the CO2 balance.
