Twelve bottles of Bordeaux that had been stored on the International Space Station (ISS) for 14 months for research purposes have returned to Earth on a spaceship belonging to the US company SpaceX. They had been sent to the ISS on behalf of the Space Cargo Unlimited start-up in Luxembourg as part of a Franco-German research project. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, which have not been named, are now being analysed by researchers from the University of Bordeaux, the Institute of Cell Biology at the University of Erlangen and the French space research agency CNES. They will be compared with bottles that have been stored on Earth under normal conditions. The experts expect significant effects of cosmic radiation and weightlessness on the wines. A tasting of the wine from the ISS is also planned in Bordeaux towards the end of February.
