Paolo Scavino
Image header

Barolo winemaker Enrico Scavino from the Paolo Scavino winery in Castiglione Falletto has died at the age of 83. He belonged to the group known as the "Barolo Boys", who enhanced the international image of Barolo at the end of the 1980s and made the wine famous worldwide.

Enrico Scavino took over the winery founded by his grandfather Lorenzo and his father Paolo and focussed on the typical Piedmontese grape varieties, but above all on Nebbiolo. He worked with passion to emphasise the differences between the individual vineyards. The vineyards cover 30 hectares exclusively in the Barolo growing area and include 20 of the appellation's most famous historical crus, including Cannubi, Monvigliero, Bricco Ambrogio, Ravera, Vignolo, Terlo, Cerretta, Prapò, Bussia and Rocche di Castiglione. Bric dël Fiasc and Rocche dell'Annunziata are among his best-known wines.

Enrico Scavino has passed on his knowledge to his daughters Elisa and Enrica (pictured), who run the winery today.
