Austrian viticulture has been massively damaged by an extremely high number of hailstorms and storms in recent weeks. According to "Der Winzer", around 2,000 ha of vineyards were affected between the end of June and the beginning of August. The hail insurance company considers the damage to be a "negative record for the extent of damage". In Central Burgenland alone, for example, 1,100 ha of vineyards suffered damage worth millions of euros. In Styria, hail fell on about 300 ha and caused damage amounting to 1.4 million euros. In Lower Austria and Wien hailstones the size of tennis balls fell and caused destruction on about 550 hectares with damages totalling almost four million euros.
