US wineries are looking for new markets as less and less wine is being consumed domestically. According to data from the analysis company Nielsen IQ, sales of Californian wines fell by around two per cent in 2022. However, according to Honore Comfort, Vice President of International Marketing at the California Wine Institute, exports have grown by around ten per cent over the past ten years. In total, they generated a turnover of 1.46 billion US dollars (1.34 billion euros). Although premium and luxury wines are most in demand in Europe, the strongest growth was recorded in countries and regions that do not have a significant wine tradition of their own, such as Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Eastern Europe.

Exports from Oregon also increased by four per cent in 2022. Canada is the most important market with a share of 45 per cent, followed by the UK. Sales there have grown by 54 per cent in the past seven years.

According to Washington Wine, the volume of exported wines in Washington State rose by an average of 8.8 per cent annually. The number of exporting wineries increased by almost a third. According to the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, export sales from the state of New York grew from 52,425 euros in 2020 to almost 731,566 euros by the end of 2022. This represents an increase of almost 1,300 per cent.

In August 2023, the USA exported wine worth 95.46 million euros. The main destinations were Canada (32.8 million euros), the UK (15.5 million euros) and Japan (7.10 million euros). Wine imports totalled 570 million euros, with France (233 million euros) and Italy (189 million euros) as the most important supplier countries.
