According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), wine consumption by people over the age of 16 in Germany fell by one litre from 23.6 to 22.6 litres per capita in the past wine year. This is confirmed by the wine consumption balance sheet, which covers the period from 1 August 2022 to 31 July 2023. While the German population is drinking less and less still wine, sparkling wine consumption has remained constant at 3.2 litres per capita compared to the same period last year.

In addition to wine purchases from retailers and direct sales from producers, the wine consumption balance also includes the quantities consumed in the catering trade. The current decline reflects both the change in consumer behaviour and demographic change in Germany, said DWI Managing Director Monika Reule.

In the past wine year, a total of 16.1 million hectolitres of wine and 2.7 million hectolitres of sparkling wine were consumed. If this is converted to the total German population of 84.4 million inhabitants, the combined per capita consumption of wine and sparkling wine is 22.3 litres. If consumption is restricted to the population aged 16 and over, their consumption of wine and sparkling wine per person and year is 26.3 litres.
