Worldwide wine production has fallen to its lowest level in 60 years with the 2017 vintage. This is reported by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). According to the figures, last year around 250 million hectolitres of wine were produced worldwide, 8.6 percent less than in 2016. This figure was only undershot in 1957, when annual wine production was 173.8 million hectolitres.

Among the EU wine producing countries, annual production in 2017 fell by 14.6 percent to just 141 million hectoliters. Italy was particularly hard hit with a 17 percent drop, Italy with 19 percent and France with 20 percent compared to 2016, while global wine consumption rose by 1.8 percent to 243 million hectoliters in 2017.

According to the figures, the largest wine consumption in the world is in the USA with 32.6 million hectolitres, followed by France with 27 million.
