The Austrian wine-growing region of Eisenberg extends the protected designation of origin DAC to the white Welschriesling variety. Previously, this was reserved solely for the red Blaufränkisch From the 2022 vintage onwards, Welschriesling wines with a vineyard designation may bear the Eisenberg DAC designation.
Welschriesling grows on around 76 of the total of 511 hectares in Austria's smallest wine-growing region. The best sites for the variety are located on the Csaterberg with iron-rich clay soils and around Rechnitz with a high proportion of green slate. The vineyards there lie between 300 and 480 metres above sea level and are the highest in Burgenland. Here, the variety can produce very fresh, mineral and structured wines. The first Eisenberg DAC Welschrieslings with a vineyard designation will be launched in June 2024.
