This year, flowering has begun in all German wine regions eight to ten days later than the long-term average. Due to the optimal weather conditions, flowering is currently proceeding very quickly and is "already complete in warm locations and with early flowering grape varieties", reports the German Wine Institute (DWI).

Since experience shows that the grapes are ready for harvesting 90 to 100 days after flowering, the main harvest for the 2021 vintage is not expected to begin until mid-September. However, the first early-ripening grapes for the preparation of Federweißen could "certainly be harvested as early as the end of August", writes the DWI.

With the hot temperatures of the past few weeks, vine growth "literally exploded after the comparatively cool and wet spring". In some cases, the shoots have grown up to 30 cm in a week. For the winegrowers, this means a lot of work in the vineyards: now the vines have to be tied up quickly so that the wind cannot break them off.
