Italian red wines are currently experiencing significant sales problems. According to Avito, the association of all Tuscan wine consortia, the famous Tuscan appellations are also reporting a declining demand in the first half of 2023. In the past six months, 13 per cent fewer bottles of Chianti Classico were bottled, six per cent less of Brunello di Montalcino, three per cent less of the wines from Bolgheri and even 17 per cent less of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Chianti remained stable with a slight increase of one per cent, while Maremma Toscana registered an increase of 13 per cent. Here, it is above all Vermentino that is the driving force. IGT Tuscany bottlings also declined by 17 per cent. In total, just over one million hectolitres of Tuscan wines were put on the market from 1 January to 30 July. This represents a decline of nine per cent compared to the same period in 2022.
