The wines of the controlled designation of origin Sicilia DOC will bear an official numbered banderole from 1 January 2022. Normally, their use is only required for DOCG wines according to the Italian wine law, but the protection consortia can apply for their use also for DOC wines on their own initiative. The initiative has been pushed by the Sicilia DOC consortium led by Antonio Rallo since 2018 to better protect and enhance the appellation's wines. Currently, 86 per cent of Sicilian wines are bottled under the Sicilia DOC designation of origin.
491 wineries must now affix the banderole to their bottles. With an alphanumeric system, it is supposed to enable complete traceability from the vineyard to bottling. At the same time, the use of a special paper and ink ensures better protection against product counterfeiting. Each label on the bottles can be read by all smartphones on which the "Trust Your Wine" app has been previously installed. It can be downloaded free of charge from the iOS and Android stores.
