Marc Almert, the 2019 World Sommelier Champion, will join the management team of the wine trading house Baur au Lac Vins in Zurich. Almert, who joined the company in 2017, will continue to work as head sommelier of the Hotel Baur au Lac and the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Pavillon. Due to his management expertise, he has now also been appointed to the top management of the wine trading house, founded in 1844, where he has already advised the purchasing team.
Marc Almert was born in Cologne in 1991 and is Vice President of the German Sommelier Union. He trains young sommeliers as a trainer and shares his knowledge with wine friends on social media channels. He himself has described his philosophy as follows: "You don't have to read an entire library to understand wine. Anyone, no matter what their background or level of knowledge, can approach the subject of wine and enjoy this multi-faceted world."
