Imports of wine to Russia rose by six per cent to 532,400 tonnes in the first ten months of 2023 compared to 501,100 tonnes in the same period in 2022, according to the state news agency New China (Xinhua), citing Maksim Chmora, head of the Russian Federal Customs Service. Chmora explained at an event organised by the Russian Wine Forum that most wine comes from Italy (30 per cent), followed by Georgia (17 per cent), Spain (13 per cent), France (8 per cent) and Portugal (6 per cent).

The EU embargo on exports to Russia due to the war of aggression in Ukraine only covers luxury goods such as expensive appellation wines.

Exports of Russian wine, on the other hand, have halved from 2,800 tonnes to 1,400 tonnes. 41 per cent of Russian wine went to China in 2023. Israel, Tajikistan and Turkey were named as other important purchasing countries.
