Demand for German sparkling wine increased at home and abroad in 2022, according to the Verband Deutscher Sektkellereien e.V. (VDS). The association, which represents 95 per cent of all sparkling wine production in Germany, announced that 284.6 million 0.75 litre bottles were sold last year. This corresponds to an increase of 2.8 per cent.

In domestic business, the increase was 2.3 per cent to 247.9 million bottles. Sales in Germany also increased again in the first half of 2023 by 6.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. Every sixth bottle of German sparkling wine is rosé. Non-alcoholic sparkling wines even achieved a sales increase of 7.2 percent.

VDS managing director Dr. Alexander Tacer says of the figures: "Even though the economic framework conditions remain tense, the industry is well on its way to regaining pre-pandemic levels."
