The Portuguese village of São Lourenco do Bairro was flooded with red wine that leaked from two broken tanks. The 2.2 million litres of DOC wine were stored at the Levira company, where they were to be distilled as part of the state-supported surplus disposal. The amount would be enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool. The spill was filmed by local residents.

Levira plays a key role in the removal of wine surpluses and said it was "doing everything in its power to ensure that the cellars and producers who have worked with us for years are not affected by this unfortunate incident. We take full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, for which we have already provided response teams". The rapid intervention of the fire brigade, which diverted the flow of wine to a field, prevented it from spilling into the River Certima, which would have caused an environmental disaster.
