Moselle winegrower Willi Schaefer from the VDP winery of the same name in Graach has died. In 1971, at the age of 22, he took over the small, traditional family winery from his father and turned it into one of the best-known wineries on the Moselle. He also achieved this through a number of strategic vineyard purchases during the land consolidation of the top Domprobst site in the late 1980s. The winery exported to the USA for the first time in 1983 and to Japan in 1991. Today, around 70 per cent of production goes abroad. The characterful and elegant Rieslings from Willi Schaefer are appreciated internationally and were included in the 2021 Power 100 ranking of the strongest wine brands on the international trading platform Liv-ex. Willi Schaefer's son Christoph and his wife Andrea have been running the winery since 2015.
