The cold snap in the night of 8 January with temperatures as low as -11°C made it possible to bring in frozen grapes for ice wine in isolated cases. The German Wine Institute (DWI) reports on frosty night harvests: The Herzer winery in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, for example, harvested around 400 litres of Pinot Blanc, while the Winzergenossenschaft Meißen (Saxony) harvested Cabernet Blanc, which yielded around 700 litres of must (pictured).

In the Ahr region, the Oliver Schell winery produced around 50 litres of Pinot Noir must, the H. Freiberger winery on the Hessische Bergstrasse 70 litres of Riesling must and the Ilmbacher Hof winery in Franconia 50 litres of Silvaner must.

At the beginning of December 2023, grapes for ice wines could already be harvested in some areas during the first cold spell of the winter.
