A jury of winegrowers, the editorial team of Sommelier magazine and experts from the VDP have honoured the best wine concepts of 2023. This year, a total of five hosts were honoured for their overall concept, which includes the creation, maintenance and development of the wine list as well as advice and support for guests. Only establishments that focus on German wines were considered.

In the "International Wine Concept" category, the jury honoured master sommelier Alex Koblinger from the Döllerer Genießerhotel in Golling (Austria). The Riesling selection in particular sets standards at international level. Koblinger is "a perfect ambassador for German wine in Austria as a land of pleasure".

Bernhard Holzer offers one of the best "national wine concepts" at Ritterhof zur Rose in Burrweiler. Wine lovers can choose from a wide variety of wine styles here. Holzer favours organic and biodynamic viticulture as well as young, courageous producers who work unconventionally. At the same time, he is not losing sight of the qualitative development of German red wines or the renaissance of bottle-fermented sparkling wines in Germany.

According to the jury, Jens Pietzonka from the Weinzentrale in Dresden also has an excellent wine list with an enormous selection of German wines. Pietzonka has been recognised as one of the most important sommeliers in the east of Germany for years. More than 50 German wineries are represented on the regular menu, and ten wine-growing regions are represented at least twice. Jens Pietzonka and his team attach great importance to reflecting the diversity of the winegrowing world.

Liro Lutter in the Essenz restaurant in Grassau also shines with his first-class wine list. White wines from German wine-growing regions in particular take up a lot of space here. Riesling in all varieties, from dry to residual sweet, from Gutswein to Grosses Gewächs, but also Silvaner or wines from Pinot varieties are available to choose from.

Sommelier Maria Vizsnyai, together with Alina and Philipp Stein, also presents an exceptional range of German wines at Steins Traube in Mainz, which also goes into the depths of the vintages. A complex regular wine list and a small list of rarities make this restaurant something special.

Guests can recognise the award-winning establishments by a brass sign at the entrance, which indicates that they offer an excellent selection of German wines.
