The Hessian state government may want to legally protect the quality categories "Erstes Gewächs" and "Großes Gewächs". This was announced by Peter Seyffardt, president of the Rheingau Wine Association, at his annual press conference, reports the "Weinwirtschaft". A corresponding application for the inclusion of the terms in the currently revised wine ordinance is already being discussed by those responsible. The VDP uses the term "Großes Gewächs" to classify its dry top wines with site indication. However, only the word mark "VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS" is legally protected.

Subject to "compliance with strict criteria", these terms are now to signal premium quality to consumers - irrespective of VDP membership. The nationally standardised terms could then be used by any producer, whether a VDP member or not. The VDP has not yet published a statement on the matter.
